Pegasus Safety Easing the Burden of Contractor Management at Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG)

19/08/2010

Since its modest beginning from a Singleton base twenty years ago, Pegasus has developed into a recognised market leader through a flexible yet sustainable philosophy and strong customer relationships. Best known for its work in the mining industry, Pegasus provides services that in a lot of cases provide relief to sites in the times where both resources are in short supply or the company is gearing up for expansion. The Pegasus Safety business is just one of these services that offer provisions right through the full contractor management cycle.

Starting with the pre-qualification of contracting companies, Pegasus Safety is able to deal with the sometimes tedious but necessary process of ensuring that all insurances, licenses, skills and safe work procedures are observed and documented as well as mapping site safety management plans with the contractor’s systems. Pegasus Safety then ensures that all contractors are aware of their safety responsibilities and the rules and regulations on site by administering the site safety induction on behalf of our customers. This may be in the form of a face-to-face classroom environment, an online learning situation or simply an assessment of prior knowledge and experience.

These services are neatly tied together using Pegasus’ custom developed software, Onsite Track Easy, which allows contractors to be managed both prior to entering site and then allowing access based on competency once they arrive on site.

Pegasus recently joined forces with Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG), the third coal export terminal for the port of Newcastle, to assist in the management of their contract workforce. With the commencement of operations at the port in July 2010, it was imperative that NCIG take control of who was issued access to their site, whilst also ensuring that all contracting companies working on their site were compliant with the relevant health, safety and environment regulations and processes.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to work with NCIG given their strong links to some of our existing customers in the Hunter Valley mining sector. After a successful construction project that saw the port commence operations in record time, it is clear that health and safety are of upmost importance and we are glad to be strengthening their already robust systems,” said Pegasus CEO, Adam Boyle.

Since partnering Pegasus in June, more than 55 companies that work on the NCIG site have been pre-qualified by Pegasus for compliance to NCIG HSEC Management Plan, ensuring safe systems of work. Pegasus will now set about maintaining records with these companies including the ongoing notification and collection of expired insurance policies through the Onsite Track Easy system.

More than 350 contractors have since been inducted through the new contractor management process including the collection of qualification, training and other competency information. A profile is developed for each contractor which enables these records to be accessed in real-time through the web-enabled software.
